VARIETY CLUB showed he will be the horse to beat in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate early next year after scoring a comfortable 1.25-length victory over stable companion Bravura in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1400m at Kenilworth on Sunday.
Third place went to Jackson, who made up ground late, while 33-1 outsider Martial Eagle claimed fourth. There was quite a lot of support for Glen Kotzen-trained filly Princess Victoria, who started at 22-10, and that resulted in Variety Club going off at 1-1.
Drawn at pole position, Variety Club lost his advantage by jumping out at the start and that allowed Piere Strydom to get Princess Victoria into the lead. Lake Arthur raced up in second while Anton Marcus placed Variety Club in third on the fence. Jackson, meanwhile, was quite a long way off the pace and when they turned for home he was giving Variety Club some eight lengths start.
