Many of the beneficiaries in Saturday’s Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile are schools assisted by the Peermont Children’s Trust (PCT), which provides after-school care to pupils from schools in areas where there is a high rate of unemployment and families depend on social grants.

The confidence and self-esteem of all these beneficiaries are boosted every year by the provision of school uniforms before the end of the first quarter. Learners are fed hot meals and assisted with homework daily, and food parcels are provided during the long school holidays. At the end of each year learners are treated to a Christmas party. All beneficiaries come from highly disadvantaged families. Most are cared for by grandparents and some are from child-headed homes with no adult guidance or care. The Trust works closely with the Department of Social Development and Department of Education.
