TRAINER Mike de Kock said he was throwing Mujaarib in at the deep end when he decided to run him in the Grade 2 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile at Turffontein on Saturday.

To the delight of De Kock, the Australian-bred colt not only surfaced well and started to swim but produced the finishing burst of a Chad le Clos to win the R600,000 race. Like Le Clos’ victory over Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the London Olympics, Mujaarib and jockey Glen Hatt put in that final surge to get up on the post and deny victory to Anton Marcus and Whiteline Fever.

The race proved to be a triumph for De Kock whose runners occupied four of the top five places.

Mujaarib, who went off at 12-1 and had to overcome No 13 draw, got up to beat Whiteline Fever (6-1) by a head, with Meadow Magic (16-1), ridden by Randall Simons, another 1.40 lengths back in third. Fourth place went to Silver Flyer (5-1), ridden by Kevin Shea, with Silent Partner and Derek David in fifth.
